Finally checked a bucket list item this week. About a decade ago I had the opportunity to take a raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Without getting into too much geography...you put in at Lee's Ferry near Page Arizona, and take out when the river slows down as you approach Lake Mead. Now for anyone that is the least bit outdoorsy, this is an amazing experience. But for an outdoor photographer, it was a bit frustrating. I went with a university geology group. For geologists the Grand Canyon is perhaps the world's best outdoor classroom. But we floated right past the best photo locations, of which there are many.
So to fulfill a promise I made to myself, this week I signed up for a 'photography only' trip down the Colorado with a small group in the spring of 2021. Why not earlier? Because there are only one or two such trips a year, and they fill up well in advance. The photographer that is organizing this trip sent me an e-mail, and by the time I signed up a day later
it was already almost full. Photography in the Grand Canyon is amazing, but there are many serious challenges, including soaking rapids, wind and sand, and extreme contrast. On that trip long ago I shot with an older 645 roll-film camera, and was able to take a few decent shots, mainly in the evenings and mornings when we were stopped at camp. For this trip I'll likely take my Fuji digital (plus perhaps an older film camera as back-up). A new challenge will be to carry enough batteries for a 10 day trip completely off the power grid. We're still over a year away and of course lots can happen. But for now I've got that bucket item checked in permanent marker.
