Where film and digital meet.....

After decades of shooting film, a few years ago I finally tip-toed into the world of digital photography. I would add the cliche "and never looked back" except that I do still shoot film occasionally, especially my trusty old Wista 4x5. But at the time I bought my first Fuji mirrorless digital, I was forced against my will to learn how to use Lightroom to work with the files.

While all of this was going on, I made another pleasant discovery. Digital software like Lightroom may be good for working with digital, but it is great for working with film! Over 30 or so years I shot a lot of 120 and 4x5 film, both transparency and negative. I was always pretty ruthless in deciding which shots to keep and which to toss, but none the less ended up with a few folders of old slides and negatives.....images that were not good enough to print, but were too interesting to throw away.

An example here is an ancient Kodacolor 35mm slide from about 1990, before I discovered medium format cameras and Velvia film. This shot was interesting enough to keep in an old folder, but way too contrasty to print. But with some simple work in Lightroom, it turns out to be a pretty nice, if not entirely original, image.
